Captain Adventure, myself and Helena start todays walk in the high moorland village of Goathland. (Home to the television program Heartbeat)
In Goathland, we headed down the side of the Mallyan Spout Hotel following the footpath down to the Mallyan Spout Waterfall. The last half mile to the waterfall is hard going, more a scramble than a walk. With high water level and wet stones we only made a sighting of it and were not able to walk underneath. We then headed right and followed the footpath, climbing steeply out of the valley towards Beck Hole. Just before Beck Hole we turned right up the cinder path towards Goathland. On the outskirts of the village we made a left turn and headed for Darnholm, a small hamlet half a mile up a country road. Entering Darnholm we started to descend into the valley crossing the railway bridge and were lucky enough to see a steam train. A little further down the road we came to a ford and stepping stones crossing the river. Leaving the village we turned left and climbed steeply up through the boggy moorland towards Whinstone Ridge (a disused quarry). At the ridge we turned right for a few hundred yards before veering right again and headed across Goathland Moor on a permissive footpath. Having sighted Goathland village in the distance, we made a right turn on a public footpath and descended to the railway station. We crossed the railway line carried on up to the village. With daylight fading we showed great strength of will by resisting the Fudge Shop and walked directly to the far side of the village for our car .
A very nice days walking, hard going at times but worth every minute!
Distance walked 7.1 miles.
